組子: a Japanese technique of assembling wooden pieces without the use of nails, thinly-slit wooden pieces are mortised, they remain in place through pressure alone, the technique is used primarily in 障子. Traditionally, the wood of choice was the 檜 or 桧, hinoki cypress. The patterns or deisgn of Kumiko (組子) panels aren’t chosen randoms, many of the nearly 200 patterns used today have been around since the Edo era. Each design has a meaning or is mimicking a pattern in nature that is thought to be a good omen. The patterns are designed to look good, but also to distribute light and wind. Traditionally it is made with hand-tools only.
