Misalignment
Overjet, horizontal misalignment (malocclusion). While a small overjet (typically 1.5–2.5 mm) is considered normal, an overjet greater than 4 mm is generally classified as excessive and may require treatment.Excessive overjet can result from genetic factors, jaw size discrepancies, prolonged thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or pacifier use.
Common issues associated with untreated overjet include:
Increased risk of dental trauma (e.g., chipped or broken front teeth)
Speech difficulties (such as lisping)
Lip strain or inability to close lips comfortably
Jaw pain and chewing problems
Reduced self-confidence due to appearance
Overjet can be effectively treated with orthodontic options such as braces, Invisalign, Herbst appliances, or in severe cases, oral surgery.
Early intervention, especially in children, can improve outcomes and reduce the need for complex treatment later.
