Solid Brick vs Brick Veneer

You can determine whether a building is solid structural brick masonry or a brick veneer cladding by examining specific details of the exterior brickwork

1, Check the brick laying pattern(bonding) Brick veneer uses a strict running bond or stretcher bond pattern(every single brick is laid horizontally lengthwise with only the long side facing outward)

2, Solid Brick Masonry, requires structural reinforcement to tie multiple layers of brick together. To do this, builders turn bricks 90 degrees so that the short end faces out-these are called header bricks. (Look for a row consisting entirely these short, square-looking ends(typically every 5th or 6th row) The complete absence of header rows on this facade strongly indicates it is veneer)

Window Openings and Depth

Brick Veneer: Window openings on modern veneer buildings usually feature shallow window casings (recesses) because the brick layer is only one unit thick (about 4 inches) over a hidden steel or concrete structure.Solid Brick Masonry: The walls are significantly thicker—often 8 to 20 inches deep—resulting in very deep, recessed windows with heavy, visible support arches or thick stone lintels spanning above the glass openings to bear the massive weight.3. Presence of Complex Architectural Curves and ShapesThe building features a large, dramatic curved entryway and concrete structural frame elements integrated into the masonry work. Achieving complex geometric, sweeping curves like these is characteristic of modern reinforced concrete structures that are simply wrapped in an exterior brick facade for aesthetic purposes.4. Locate Weep HolesWalk up close to the base of the walls (just above the foundation) or just above the windows. If you find small gaps or finger-sized holes drilled periodically into the vertical mortar joints, it is definitely a brick veneer. These are weep holes designed to allow water that seeps behind the single layer of brick cladding to drain safely out of the internal air gap. Solid load-bearing masonry walls generally lack these gaps.InterNACHI® – International Association of Certified Home Inspectors

When a building is “wrapped in red brick veneer,” it means the walls are not actually made of solid brick. Instead:

  1. The Structure: The actual weight-bearing walls are usually made of something else, such as concrete blocks, steel frames, or wooden studs. This is the part that keeps the building from falling down.
  2. The Veneer: A thin layer of red bricks is attached to the outside of that structure. These bricks are not holding up the roof; they are there primarily for aesthetics (to make it look like a classic brick building) and for protection (to shield the structure from wind and rain).

Why use a veneer instead of solid brick?

  • Cost: It is much cheaper to use a thin layer of brick than to build the entire house out of solid masonry.
  • Weight: Veneers are lighter, meaning the foundation of the building doesn’t have to be as massive.
  • Insulation: Because there is usually a small gap between the veneer and the structural wall, architects can add insulation in that space, making the building more energy-efficient.
  • Speed: It is much faster to “wrap” a building in veneer than to lay every single brick as a structural support.
